a poem for Denise Shubin

through this dense world

my blood fire ignites

upwards

weaving motion from

a fire within

this Flamenco

punctuated by stomps,

claps, insistence,

charging the night

shedding air in waves

this heat lowering

the density of

all it consumes

the fire in movement

a bailaora ablaze

dancing around you

these words a flame

around you now, relieving

the density with wavy

Andalusian heat.

This poem was performed on April 19, 2012 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Shubin Theatre. Thank you to Bonnie MacAllister of Certain Circuits for asking me to write and perform this poem for this wonderful event.
